DRIVERS face diversions when a road is closed next month for bridge repairs.

Work will start on February 13 on bridge parapet protection at Grimescar Bridge at Grimescar Road between Birkby and Ainley Top.

The work will be carried out by Kirklees Council’s Highways Streetcare Unit and will take around four weeks to complete, weather permitting.

The scheme will cost in the region of £30,000 and will see the installation of safety containment kerbs on the bridge plus other kerbing and drainage improvements.

The scheme will also see road re-surfacing and new road markings.

To carry out the work safely it will be necessary to close Grimescar Road at Burn Road and Halifax Old Road at the junction of South Cross Road.

Access for local residents will be permitted either side of the restriction, but there will be no through access permitted for vehicles. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

A signed diversion route will be in place and will be via Birkby Hall Road, Birkby Road, the A629 Halifax Road, Ainley Top Roundabout, the A643 Brighouse Road.

Meanwhile, February 5 will see the start of work to improve pedestrian facilities on the A62 Manchester Road in the Longroyd Bridge area of Huddersfield.

The work will take place at the Manchester Road junction with St Thomas’ Road and is expected to be complete by end of April.

Work will include new red and green man pedestrian crossing facilities, re-surfacing of the road and footpath, plus improvements to the pedestrian islands.

Slip roads at the junction will need to be closed to enable the work to be carried out safely.

The left turn slip road from Manchester Road into St Thomas Road will be closed between 9.30am and 3pm for up to four weeks at the start of the scheme from February 5.

During the closure, drivers will be asked to follow signed diversion routes. Access for pedestrians will be maintained.

In order to complete the scheme as soon as possible, work will be carried out on Sundays.

Drivers are warned that despite off -peak working, some delays will be inevitable.
