A DAMAGED bridge at Slaithwaite is to be repaired.

British Waterways officials have agreed to repair the bridge off Britannia Road following complaints by residents.

Coping stones dislodged by lorries using the bridge spanning Huddersfield Narrow Canal will be replaced.

Workmen will also carry out repairs to strengthen a section of the canal wall.

The bridge opened in September 2001 at the same time as the canal reopened following a £30m restoration programme.

The move was welcomed by Kirklees councillor Dorothy Lindley, who said: "The bridge was a bit of an eyesore. When we are trying to attract more tourists, it does not give a very good impression."
