VOLUNTEERS have repaired a public cycle and footpath after a vandal attack.

The repairs have been carried out on the popular Calder Valley Greenway to put right damage caused by vandals to one of the landscaped seating areas in Ravensthorpe.

The work was organised by Kirklees Council, Dewsbury Housing Market Renewal and the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers.

The repairs took place on the section of path along the former rail corridor between Huddersfield Road (A644) and Holroyd Park, Ravensthorpe.

To prevent repeated attacks, the walls, which were originally drystone, have been strengthened with mortar.

Clr David Sheard, Kirklees Cabinet member for Highways, said: “The young people on the Entry to Employment programme have learned new skills during the course of the work and they should be proud of the quality of their workmanship.

“I would like to thank the volunteers for all their hard work.

“I would urge Greenway users and the Sustrans Voluntary Rangers to be the eyes and ears on the National Cycle Network routes and alert us to any future problems so we can deal with them as they arise”.
