REGULAR films could be back on the screen at Holmfirth's Picturedrome cinema if a rescue plan succeeds.

The move comes after the daily film programme was axed because of poor audience figures and spiralling costs.

Officials from lottery- funded Screen Yorkshire have stepped in for talks with cinema boss Peter Carr.

Development manager Jay Arnold said: "We want to work with the cinema and other local organisations to maintain a film programme in Holmfirth.

"The presence of a locally run, locally involved cinema is a huge resource for the community and one which is worth preserving."

Other events - including live music - are continuing at the Picturedrome.

Arthouse and film club movies are also staying.

Owner Peter Carr revealed earlier this month how he had struggled for two years.

The cinema first opened in 1913 as The Valley, closing its doors in 1967 before becoming a bingo hall.

Films returned when Mr Carr reopened the building seven years ago.
