A CRICKET club's attempt to extend its drinking hours could be stumped after complaints from nearby residents.

Householders close to Elland Cricket, Athletic and Bowling Club, on Hullen Edge Road, are aiming to hit the club's plans to open until 1.30am for six.

The club has applied to Calderdale Council to extend drinking times to 1.30am in the bar and half-an-hour later in the on-site club.

But they could be on a sticky wicket after nearly 20 objections.

Local people say they fear high levels of noise from discos and also boozy revellers streaming home in the early hours.

One resident said: "This is normally a quiet residential area and the cricket club is really for sports - it is not a nightclub."

Another resident said the noise from social events was becoming more of a feature in his and his wife's life.

He added: "We already frequently have to use earplugs when we are trying to sleep and fear that an increase in the licensing hours would mean more sleepless nights to come."

But club secretary Christine Smith dismissed the residents fears.

She said: "We are only asking for an extra hour. People have complained and said we open the windows at the back in the summer which lets noise out. The windows don't open."

Mrs Smith said the money raised behind the bar from some events went back into the club to carry on it's sporting legacy, and she added: "We are hopeful that we will be granted the extra hour."

A licensing meeting is scheduled for 2pm next Wednesday at Halifax Town Hall when councillors will consider whether to grant the application.
