A new campaign of fitness sessions is being launched in Huddersfield – after a survey to see what people wanted.

The sessions will be running at Almondbury Sports Centre with the aim of making health and fitness a priority for the local community.

The sports centre is launching the programme of activities in response to a recent survey with local residents and existing users which asked them what they would like the centre to provide.

Council officials ran the survey to discover what residents across the Almondbury area wanted to see at the centre.

The Sports Centre in Fernside Avenue is located within Almondbury High School grounds at the heart of the local community. The centre already provides an excellent, wide range of sports facilities and the ‘on your doorstep’, community resource is used not only by local residents, but also attracts people from further afield.

Prices have been frozen for the New Year, with gym membership for example at 10 per month.

The gym has a full range of weight equipment and cardio-vascular equipment such as treadmills, bikes and rowing machines to enable users to improve fitness and toning, and free induction sessions are offered.

Strictly Come Dancing may be over, but the centre is offering the chance for people to keep dancing at the new Zumba class.

A Latin American dance class will be launched at the end of January led by a popular local coach. The exhilarating, effective and easy to follow class is a great calorie burner.

The glass backed squash courts at Almondbury Sports Centre are second to none. Squash is a great way to get fit, feel great and meet some fantastic people.

New racquetball coaching session for children and adults will start shortly at the centre.

With its own dance studio and sports hall, the centre also offers badminton, football, including the Tesco football skills course for 5-11 year olds, cricket nets, table tennis, children’s dance sessions (for 9-12 year olds), tea dances and teen activity sessions..

Clr Jean Calvert, Kirklees Cabinet member for Wellbeing, Health and Communities, said: “Many people think seriously about improving their health at the start of the New Year.

“Almondbury Sports Centre offers a wide range of facilities and classes for everyone, young and old, at an affordable price.

“It is a fantastic community resource providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere and I would like to encourage people to visit the centre and try out some of the new and existing classes and sessions.

“Alternatively if you are interested in taking part in a sport that we do not currently offer, talk to staff at the centre who may be able to help get your idea off the ground.”
