Residents opposed to a major retail scheme are planning a protest walk. The Action Group Mirfield-25 will walk round part of Mirfield Moor which Kirklees Council has assigned for industrial use.

The walk will start at 11am on Monday, May 1, at the junction of Slipper Lane and Mirfield Free Grammar School's playing fields.

The site - 30.22 acres of former agricultural land between Slipper Lane and the Sunnybank estate - is known as Mirfield-25.

Some people fear the council's decision to allocate land for industrial use will lead to a huge retail park on the site near the school.

A retail park was first proposed for the site in 2000. But it was not until last October that worried residents formed an action group, during a meeting at Roberttown Church.

Malcolm Brown, chairman of AGM-25, said: "This development will be a blot on the landscape.

"In addition to enlisting support for our cause, we wish to make our voice heard by those who are meant to represent us in Kirklees.

"The walk will show just how much land will be affected by the development."

Another AGM-25 member, Nichola Elsey, said: "We need to keep Mirfield Moor green.

"I say an emphatic `no' to any development on this site."
