KIRKLEES residents are being urged to `go green' during National Recycle Now Week.

Kirklees Council's environmental services department have joined forces with recycling organisation Waste and Resource Action Programme to encourage people to recycle their household waste.

Clr Martyn Bolt, the council's cabinet member for recycling, was promoting the campaign on Monday at recycling sites at Sainsbury's at Shorehead in Huddersfield and Asda on Mill Street East in Dewsbury.

Helped by his son Stephen and council recycling mascot Cyril the Squirrel, Clr Bolt handed out Recycle Now T-shirts to shoppers to persuade them to live a greener lifestyle.

The theme for National Recycle Now Week - which runs until Friday - is `transform something today'.

As part of the campaign, information leaflets will be issued demonstrating how household waste can be made into useful objects. There will also be advice about how people can change their lifestyles to make a long-term commitment to recycle more.

Clr Bolt said: "We all produce our own body weight in rubbish each seven weeks. In Kirklees, we recycled nearly 40,000 tonnes last year. We are working hard to offer more recycling opportunities for residents.

"Recycle Now Week provides an excellent opportunity to thank residents for their efforts and ask that they continue to increase the amount they recycle and encourage those that do not recycle to join the majority and make a difference."
