A CANDIDATE from George Galloway's Respect party is to contest a Kirklees Council by-election.
Dave Ellis, a caretaker at Huddersfield Technical College and vice-chairman of the Unison union's Kirklees branch , will stand in the Greenhead ward.
Mr Ellis, who took part in a caretakers' strike last year, said: "I got involved with Respect because a lot of people from them came forward with help and support during the strike."
The 60-year-old from Honley will fight the seat left vacant after the death of Labour councillor Annie Smith.
Mr Ellis said: "I don't believe the working classes and the minority groups, are represented."
His campaign opens at 7.30pm tomorrow with a public meeting at the Birkby/Fartown Community Centre in Wasp Nest Road, Fartown.
Mr Ellis will be joined by John Rees, who is Respect's national secretary.
