The number of new restaurants and takeaways in Kirklees has risen by nearly a fifth.

And that’s good news for people who like to dine out, increasing the choice available.

There were 62 new restaurants, cafes or other caterers registered in the Kirklees Council area in 2014/15, up 20.4% from 53 in 2013/14.

The number of new takeaways newly registered across the area was also 62 in 2014/15, up from 52 in 2013/14, a 19.2% rise.

The area has also seen the number of moveable food units, like takeaway vans, soar by 70%, with 17 new registrations in 2014/15 compared to 10 in 2013/14.

In Calderdale, the overall number of food premises on the register rose by 6% between the start of 2013/14 and the start of 2014/15, with a 3.9% rise in the number of restaurants and caterers, from 1,649 to 1,713.

Figures are based on a Freedom of Information Request for food premises registering with the councils, so they can be inspected as part of the food hygiene requirements.

Most businesses will register when they open or in the month or so before, although some may not realise the requirement until they have been trading for a while, although they are likely to be registered when they come to the attention of the council.

Others may need to re-register following a change in name or premises.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “We visit all food premises, without prior notification where possible.

“Council officials visit higher risk premises more frequently than those in lower risk categories. If practices or conditions are not satisfactory, they try to resolve the situation informally. If they need to resort to formal action, they may serve a legal notice, prosecute, or in extreme cases close the business.

“Following an inspection most businesses are given a food hygiene rating”.
