FORMER pupils of a Holme Valley school which closed in the wake of the Aberfan disaster have been invited to attend a reunion.

Organiser and former pupil Barbara Kaye, said Brockholes CE School was closed in the 1960s amid fears that unstable rocks close to the school could tumble onto the building.

The move followed the Aberfan disaster in October, 1966. Some 144 people, including 116 children, died when slag waste slid onto the village in South Wales.

However, the Brockholes school never did come to grief – and remains in use by Brockholes Village Trust.

The reunion will take place from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday, May 16, at the village hall, which opened as a school in 1837.

Mrs Kaye said: “Some of the oldest pupils still around will be in their 80s, while those who were attending when the school closed will probably be in their 40s. We want to attract as many as possible.”

Admission is £1, including light refreshments. Contact Barbara Kaye on 01484 667620 or Barbara Jemmison (nee Haigh) on 01484 662328.
