IT’S a home fit for a king ... well, an award at least.

Croft House, Berry Croft, Honley, has been awarded Honley Civic Society’s (HCS) first Better Honley Award.

The new award by the 25-year-old society is for buildings and people who have helped to enhance the village.

The three-bedroom cottage which dates back to the 1850s was refurbished by Bill and Louise Stewart.

The couple had bought the then dilapidated building with a view to renovating it and selling it.

The cottage – which blends modern and traditional – includes a brick-backed fireplace, a handmade glass panelled staircase and maple flooring.

HCS chairman Colin Hill said: “Some years ago it was a rather tumbledown property and it was refurbished to a very high standard and very appropriate for Honley’s conservation area. We decided it was fit for an award.”

The society is looking for new nominations for other buildings and people in the village.

Mr Hill said: “It needn’t be a property. It can be for people who have done something to improve Honley. There are no tight restrictions.”
