A 25-YEAR-OLD man sparked a major emergency services alert after drunkenly climbing on to the roof of a Huddersfield restaurant.

The man climbed up a ladder on to the roof of the Arya Persian restaurant on Brook Street.

The ladder had been put up by staff who were using it to erect Christmas decorations.

Once on the roof, the man discovered it was too slippery for him to get back down.

He clung to the roof while the restaurant owner called the fire brigade.

Huddersfield firefighters arrived and a firefighter climbed a ladder to reassure the man, while an aerial platform was sent up to the roof.

The man tried to jump for the platform as it was moving, but was eventually guided on to it safely.

Ambulance crews and police had been called to the incident at 10.30pm on Friday night and the man was arrested.

Sub-officer Alan Woodcock, from Huddersfield fire station, said: "He was Swiss and could only speak broken English.

"But we understand he'd had a few to drink and shot up one of the ladders. He was very lucky not to fall."
