CREATIVE youngsters who added a splash of colour to a Battyeford church have been rewarded for their hard work.

Rosie Stockdale, aged 11, Reece Joseph, 12, and Daniel Priest, 13, were presented with a Mayor's Award by Kirklees Mayor Clr Barbara Allonby at a ceremony in the Hudawi Centre, Hillhouse.

They painted flowerpots to decorate the Church of Christ the King as part of Newsome's Junior Youth Inclusion Programme.

About 25 youngsters are on the programme, which meets in Newsome Youth Club at the high school twice a week.

Youth worker Richelle Kenefick said: "It gets the young people involved in activity outside school, so they are not isolated. They make new friends and learn new skills."

They can also get involved in sport. Over the summer youngsters were shown footballing skills at Huddersfield Town.

They have also worked on arts and crafts projects, such as T-shirt printing and media projects.

Cash for the project comes from Kirklees's Children's Fund.
