A man has appeared in court after trying to dodge a train fare.

Richard Frost, of Bishops Court in Berry Brow, pleaded guilty to travelling on a railway with intent to avoid payment.

The 32-year-old also admitted stealing a toilet roll belonging to First TransPennine Express.

The offences were spotted by an off-duty police officer at Huddersfield Railway Station on April 26.

He noticed Frost board a train with the stolen toilet roll.

When the conductor asked to see his ticket he told him that he had no money or identification on him.

Two special constables on board the train discovered his passport.

As a result of this they found that there was an outstanding warrant for Frost’s arrest.

He was arrested when the train arrived at Leeds.

Arfaq Nabi, mitigating, said that his client’s offending began in 2007 when he began using heroin.

At the end of the year of last year he served a short spell in prison and was able to detox but soon fell back into bad habits.

Mr Nabi said: “His offending started again in February because his benefits hadn’t begun and he’s mixing with his old crowd.

“On the day in question he’d spent three weeks in isolation and wanted to go and see his grandmother who lives in Dewsbury.”

Mr Nabi said his client would have then got some money from his grandmother and was adamant that he would have paid his fare on the journey home.

Magistrates ordered Frost to comply with a week’s curfew between 7pm and 7am. He must also pay £10 compensation for his rail ticket.
