A NEW tow-away scheme will rid streets of abandoned cars, a council meeting was told.

Kirklees Council is bringing in a £25 charge to come and take old bangers away.

The move follows complaints about wrecked and rusting cars left in streets and on spare land.

A total of 600 vehicles were found to have been abandoned in Kirklees last year.

Council leader Clr Kath Pinnock said: "These abandoned vehicles are an eyesore and a danger to children.

"With our new scheme, there will now be no need to leave old cars on the street or in back gardens."

No starting date has been set for the £25 collection scheme and only cars and small vans will be eligible.

Holders of Kirklees Priority Passports will get the service for £6.

Cabinet member Clr Ann Raistrick said: "Ideally, this would be a free scheme but it is very generous as it is.

"It's very difficult to dispose of old cars and this should really help people in Kirklees."
