TONS of straw were destroyed by a blaze at a Huddersfield riding school.

Intruders set fire to the straw in the barn at Longley Riding School at 9.15pm last night.

Station Officer Paul Mace, of Huddersfield fire station, said: "The 20 tons of straw had only been delivered on Monday and it's all been ruined.

"The fire was confined mainly to the straw, but the roof was damaged."

Firefighters from Huddersfield and Holmfirth were at the scene until 11pm, spreading the straw out and dousing the flames.

They returned at 1am and 6am to make sure the fire had not flared up again.
