ADULTS have been asked to help look after the growing number of children in care.

Kirklees Council is looking for new foster carers to deal with the problem.

The number of children in care increased by more than 8% from 589 in 2011 to 639 at the end of March this year.

Cabinet member for children Clr Cath Harris urged people to volunteer. The Ashbrow Labour woman’s daughter became a foster parent this year.

She said: “Kirklees, in line with councils across the country, is dealing with increasing numbers of children in care.

“As a new foster grandmother and a councillor, I can see that foster care offers these children the best possible option either to allow their own family situation to stabilise, or while more permanent adoption arrangements are made.

“There are also opportunities for short and long-term fostering and emergency care for all age groups ranging from babies to teenagers. At Kirklees we’re also always keen to talk to people who might be interested in looking after sibling groups.”
