THEY did it on horseback, on two wheels and, in many cases, just on their own two feet.
However they did it, once again the people of Huddersfield turned out in their hundreds to raise thousands of pounds in the Examiner Charity Challenge.
Organised by the Huddersfield Lions, the 19th annual challenge event, in Meltham, gave people the chance to complete one of a variety of courses around the village for their chosen charity.
There was a four or seven-mile walk, bike rides of eight, 16, 22 and 48 miles and a route for horse riders of about 12 miles. There was also a two-mile route at Blackmoorfoot reservoir for people with wheelchairs and pushchairs.
More than 700 people had pre-registered for Sunday’s event. Hundreds more turned up at Meltham Sports and Community Centre on a sunny day to sign up.
In a massive community effort, about 150 volunteers were there to make sure it went smoothly.
And the event is believed to have raised nearly £40,000.
Examiner editor Roy Wright, who did the eight-mile cycle ride with daughter Lucy, 14, said: “Once again, the people have taken part have surpassed themselves and shown what community spirit can achieve.
“A whole host of charities will benefit from their efforts.
“Thanks should go to the Lions, who have been responsible for such a well organised event, and to the army of volunteers who have helped out.”
Bob Armitage, of the Lions, was one of the organisers. He said: “Since 1990 we have raised about £500,000.
“It’s about raising money and allowing charities to raise money on the back of our organisation.
“A lot of people give up their time to make it happen and it says a lot about community spirit.”
Alan Bradford, of Netherton, did the seven-mile walk just weeks after having treatment for liver cancer and three years after overcoming bowel cancer.
He had raised more than £500 for three cancer charities.
He said: “It’s a great idea to have an event like this. We are the lucky ones for being able to take part – it’s good to be able to do something to help the poor people who wouldn’t be able to.”
Leonard Waite, of Marsden, did the seven-mile walk for Macmillan Cancer Support.
He said: “I’m doing a 14-mile walk next week, so this was a nice warm-up.
“Macmillan looked after my mum before she died, so I wanted to give something back.”
Richard Todd and his daughter Bethany, 11, of Linthwaite, did the eight-mile cycle ride.
Richard was raising money for Cancer Research UK and Bethany for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Richard said: “It’s a great idea – I’d just have liked the course to have been flatter!
“We’ve been training for two months because I’ve not been on a bike for 20 years. We’ve lost family to cancer and Alzheimer’s, so it meant a lot to raise money for the charities.”
Nicky DeWhytell, development officer for Yorkshire Air Ambulance, said the event provided a massive boost to charities like hers.
She said: “We need to raise about £7,200 a day to keep our ambulances in the air, so it’s fantastic to get this kind of support.
“It’s a major date in the Huddersfield diary and it’s a great day for the community. It’s marvellous that the paper supports it and it’s good to see so many people turning out.”
Numbers on the free bottled water given out on the day were entered in to prize draw.
The winning bottle number was 395. The winner gets £100 for their chosen charity.
Please note: anyone who did not receive instructions with their certificate about how to pay their money in should hand the money in at the Examiner office on Queen Street South in Huddersfield.
