POLICE are celebrating one year of clearing crime from Yorkshire roads.

The Regional Roads Policing Team (RRPT) hailed its first 12 months with a seizure of £200,000 of cocaine with help from West Yorkshire Police on September 19.

The team, which incorporates all four forces in Yorkshire and Humberside and has powers across the country, says it has seized over £3.75m of criminal cash and goods and made over 500 arrests, since it was formed on September 18, 2008.

RRPT was set up to combat organised criminals using the road network for illegal enterprises from drugs and people trafficking to high-value vehicle theft.

RRPT commander Chief Insp Mick Hunter said: “When we began this journey 12 months ago, we had a clear directive from the chief constables and the four police authorities to provide a strong resource to support divisions, local teams and the four forces, in tackling criminals who use the road network to commit crime.”
