A BUSY main road through a rural village will be closed for three weekends next month.

The A637 through Flockton will be shut on the weekend of November 11 and 12 and the following two weekends.

The closure is to rebuild walls and fit new kerbs.

During weekdays from November 13 temporary lights will be in use to allow work at the roadside to be carried out safely.

The work will inevitably mean long delays for drivers.

The road is used as a main route between Huddersfield and the M1 motorway.

Clr Mark Hemingway said: "The road will be closed because at some points it is single carriageway.

"People in the village were asked whether they wanted to the works to happen quickly, which would require the road to be closed, or to happen at a slower pace which would not have such an effect.

"But as far as I understand it, the majority of people who were consulted said they wanted the work to be carried out quickly."

A diversion route will be signposted and access for residents will be maintained at all times.

Businesses in the village will be open as usual.
