GRITTING teams were busy this morning after overnight snowfalls hit Huddersfield.

High ground saw several inches of snow which started in the early hours of the morning.

A full team of Kirklees Council gritting vehicles carried out a full grit of roads in the area at 9pm last night.

Frank O'Dwyer, streetworks manager for Kirklees highways, said the council's 34-strong team were out again at 5am this morning.

He said that because of sleety showers and deteriorating conditions teams returned to the depot around 6.30am and were out again to carry out a second morning grit.

He said four hand-gritting teams were also out this morning, shovelling snow off pavements and helping access to doctors' surgeries.

Black ice made roads treacherous in some areas.

A red Ford Fiesta skidded and careered off Grimescar Road at Ainley Top around 8.30am.

It ploughed through a barrier and plummeted into a field below, but the driver was unhurt.

Cars also skidded off Greenfield Road on the moors above Holmfirth and a car skidded and hit a wall at New Mill Road, Holmfirth.

More snow is expected later, turning to rain.
