ROAD casualties in Calderdale have slumped to their lowest since 1986.

Some 953 people were injured on the district's roads last year.

This is 250 fewer than in the previous 12 months.

Seven people died and 104 were seriously hurt in 2005, in both cases lower figures than for 2004.

Calderdale Council said new speed cameras had saved lives by forcing drivers to slow down.

Road safety officer Peter Shepherdson said: "I am delighted we have had a lot fewer casualties, but very disappointed that so many people are being hurt.

"The council is introducing schemes which are making the roads safer.

"But this does not compensate for the careless driving we all see every day."

Mr Shepherdson said the numbers of people failing to wear seatbelts was still a matter of concern.

He said: "You might not be able to avoid the collision, but a seatbelt halves your chance of being hurt."
