DRIVERS in Kirklees are being urged to keep their cars secure - or risk thieves striking.

A travelling show has been put together to give the warning.

It comes to Huddersfield at the weekend after opening at Dewsbury's Asda store on Wednesday.

Drivers are being told to shut, lock and secure their vehicles, and to remove all valuables from view.

Officers from Kirklees Community Safety Partnership - a link between the council and police - will be on hand at the roadshow to give security tips.

The message will also be sent to every household and business in Kirklees in the new edition of the free Community Newspaper.

Martin Sykes, chief inspector for West Yorkshire Police, who has been heavily involved in the campaign, said: "Theft from vehicles is a major concern in Kirklees and is something that the public need to be fully aware and help reduce.

"By taking a little extra care, people can vastly reduce their chances of becoming a victim of this type of crime.

"It only means looking in your car before you leave it and making sure there is nothing on show."

Kirklees Community Safety Partnership manager Simon Massey said: "It is difficult for agencies to reduce crime when belongings are left on show for the taking.

"I hope that everyone will play their part by listening to our message and acting on our advice.

"We are all responsible for making sure that the opportunities for crime are minimised."

The campaign moves to the Kingsgate shopping centre in Huddersfield this Saturday and Sunday.

More locations are planned throughout the district.
