HUNDREDS of buses that use Huddersfield town centre are to be re-routed during the closure of a busy road.

Bus operators say 100 buses an hour travel up and down Kirkgate.

From Monday, all will have to be re-routed for six weeks because of roadworks by gas firm Transco.

The £25,000 scheme will replace about 170 metres of metal mains with more durable plastic piping.

The work will affect Kirkgate from Market Place to the junction with Venn Street.

Bus services will be diverted out of the town centre via Northumberland Street.

Details of the changes are:

* All services that use Westgate, Kirkgate and Lord Street to leave the town centre will have to use Railway Street, Northumberland Street and the far end of Lord Street.

* Services that continue on to Leeds Road will use the old bus stop across from the Post Office in Northumberland Street as an alternative to Lord Street.

* Buses which go on Wakefield Road will use temporary stops on the lower section of St Peter's Street.

* Services that travel up Kirkgate and Westgate will run uphill as normal, but will use the opposite side of the road.

* Stop W1 outside Byram Arcade on Westgate will move to either the bus station or St Peter's Street.

* Stops K1, K2 and K3 on Lord Street will move to St Peter's Street.

* Stop K4 at the far end of Lord Street will be moved to Northumberland Street, across from the Post Office.

* Stops K5 and K6, which are on Kirkgate ouside the Parish Pump pub, will be moved to stops W3 and W4, which are in Westgate outside Elite Fisheries.

* The stop where people get off the bus in Kirkgate will be moved to W2, which is outside The Wellington pub in Westgate.
