ROADWORKS are causing major delays for motorists heading from Huddersfield to Halifax.

Drivers on their way to work yesterday morning had to wait about an hour to complete the journey, which normally takes about 30 minutes.

Those travelling into Halifax along the A629 Calderdale Way were confronted by tailbacks stretching for about a mile and a half.

The congestion was caused by roadworks at Salterhebble, Halifax, where junction improvements and resurfacing work are under way.

The repair programme started on Sunday and is expected to last six weeks.

Delays are likely to continue until the work is over.

A spokesman for Calderdale Council apologised for the inconvenience to motorists but said the work was essential.

Motorists heading in the opposite direction, into Huddersfield, were held up by an accident at 8am yesterday.

A car had overturned, but the driver was uninjured.

However, a second vehicle crashed into the back of a police car which was parked at the scene while officers dealt with the crash.
