ROBBERS fled with a substantial amount of cash after attacking a security guard at a Huddersfield supermarket.

The victim had just collected money from the Asda store on Bradford Road and was returning to his Securitas van when the thief struck at 9.20am yesterday.

He ran up to the victim and hit him once in the face, knocking him over.

As the guard crumpled to the ground, the raider grabbed the cash box and jumped into a white Ford Fiesta.

The car, driven by another man, sped off. The car - registration J447 WRE - was found burning in the Oxley Road area of Sheepridge less than 10 minutes later.

Det Insp Andy Parr, of Kirklees CID, said: "We believe this car had been stolen and had false plates.

"If anyone saw the car or the men hanging around the Asda car park before the robbery, the raid itself or their getaway we would urge them to contact us.

"We would especially like to hear from anyone who saw the Fiesta being dumped and set on fire in Holt Avenue. Did they get into another vehicle there or did they run away?"

The man who thumped the security guard was white, aged 18 to 35, 6ft tall and stocky. He wore dark clothes including a hooded top. The getaway driver wore a dark jacket over a fawn hooded top and light-coloured trousers or tracksuit bottoms.

The guard suffered slight facial injuries.

The burned car is now being examined by police forensic experts.
