A MUSIC festival aimed at getting youth groups working together is planned for Clayton West.

The rock music festival called West Fest will include 15 bands and DJs.

It is planned for September 3 at land near Clayton West Scout Hut.

Festival organisers are hoping it will attract youngsters from Denby Dale and Kirkburton and promote the activities of the various youth groups in the area.

Scout leader and organiser Ewan Scott said everything is organised but councillors could still scupper the event if they don't approve a grant of £3,000.

He said: "This is a kick start event to get young people involved in youth groups and worthwhile things.

"There is no real cohesion between all the different groups and we are hoping this event might be the start of better relationship.

"If the councillors give us the funding then I think it will be a great success and a massive benefit to the local youths."

Mr Scott said initial plans were for a small concert with a few bands playing, but the youngsters' enthusiasm meant West Fest grew.

"We were just going to get a few bands playing from the back of a truck," he said.

"But it has grown and grown and we have had to apply for an entertainment licence. If everything goes to plan we are convinced it will be a great day.

"It is just a one-off but if we do manage to get a decent crowd and the kids enjoy it we may look to increase it next year."

Councillors will decide on whether to pledge £3,000 to the event when the Agbrigg area committee - covering an area stretching from Denby Dale through Kirkburton to Mirfield - meets at the Salvation Army building, in Leeds Road, Mirfield, at 7.30 tonight.
