A ROMANIAN woman was arrested in Huddersfield town centre after claiming to be deaf and dumb and asking for money.
Police made the arrest on New Street at 11.30am yesterday after the woman, who claimed to be Spanish, was seen approaching elderly people with a hand-written card asking for money.
Police said its is suspected she was involved in a scam where an accomplice watches where the victims put their purses or money then follow them into a shop and steal it.
Sgt John McFadzean said: “We’ve arrested half a dozen people in the last month doing the same trick.
“They’ve been pretending to be deaf and dumb, approaching elderly people and asking for a donation.
“This woman was carrying a card which asked for sponsorship.
“Once they’ve been given a couple of quid, a second person is looking where the victim has put their purse then followed them and stole it.
“It’s not just happening in Huddersfield – there are reports in other towns too.
“People should not to give them money and not to show where your purse or money is kept.”
