A fund has been set up in memory of tragic rugby player Ronan Costello.

Well-wishers have set up the JustGiving page to help the family of the talented 17-year-old Huddersfield Giants Academy player.

They want to donate the funds to Ronan’s family.

His family welcomed the move but urged that all donations go to the Danny Jones Defibrillator Fund, set up in memory of the former Keighley player.

Ronan was injured while playing for the club’s Under 19 side against Salford Red Devils on Saturday.

He was airlifted to hospital from the pitch at the DRAM Centre in Dalton but sadly died in hospital on Tuesday.

Several of his team-mates from the game, which was abandoned immediately, were at the John Smith’s Stadium to express their condolences.

They viewed flowers and tributes left by fans outside the Stadium.

Several floral tributes have been also left at the Brighouse Rangers club. Ronan spent eight years playing with Lindley Swifts before signing for Brighouse and then becoming a Giant.

The JustGiving page says the organisers are trying to raise £500 for the family of Ronan at a tragic time.

An inscription on the site reads: “A talented young player, taken too soon.”

In a statement, Ronan’s family thanked Rugby League fans for their compassion and generosity. They said: “We appreciate well-wishers’ concerns in offering financial assistance through newly formed ‘Just Giving’ sites but have requested that all donations in support of Ronan be made via the Danny Jones Defibrillator Fund.”

Details of the appeal have been circulated widely on social media and have been tweeted and retweeted by Huddersfield Giants players and by many in the Rugby League world.
