Roof repairs will begin at Huddersfield Town Hall this week, closing the concert hall for five months.

Restoration work means the 1,200 seat venue is out of bounds until August. The rest of the town hall will remain open.

The last concert was held on Saturday night and special plans to protect the Father Willis organ are also in place. It will be sealed off to protect it from dust or rising temperatures that can affect its sound.

Workers will also safeguard the ornate ceiling ahead of work to re-roof a section of the building to make it watertight.

Other Huddersfield Town Hall services, including the register office, council chamber, conference and meeting rooms are unaffected by the work.

A number of concerts that were already booked for the hall have been moved to other venues.

Huddersfield Parish Church will host the Lions Concert on June 13 while the Huddersfield Choral Society’s concert on May 7 will be staged at the Royal Hall, Harrogate.
