A SINGLE mother has been left in a tumbledown, damp-ridden and mould- infested council house with holes in the roof.

Cheryl McGregor, 24, has lived at Watercroft, Almondbury, for three years with children Aiden, two, and Brooke, 10 months.

Over the past three months Miss McGregor, who suffers from depression and asthma, says living there has become unbearable.

Because of holes in her roof damp has infested the upstairs of the house, rotting the curtain, carpet, beds and furniture. She adds that the staircase and floorboards in her living room sink when weight is put on them.

Miss McGregor says she has to share her bed with her children because their bedroom is so badly affected.

She says she has applied to Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing to be moved, but so far to no avail.

She adds that her GP and health worker have complained to KNH.

Miss McGregor said: “My kids are getting colds all the time and I’m getting asthma attacks. It’s disgusting. And they say I’m not a priority.

“It’s horrible living there. I’m on antidepressants and it’s making me more depressed.

“I’m watching my stuff rot. It’s horrible living there.

“I’ve spoken to Kirklees Council and my MP, but nothing’s happening.

“I hate having to put my kids in that situation.”

A KNH spokesman said: “We are very sorry that Ms McGregor has a problem with damp and mould in her home.

“But we can assure her that we are dealing with it.

“Ms McGregor reported a roof leak on February 6 and this was repaired the very next day. She also reported a problem with mould round the windows in November and this was also treated.

“However, as the treatment doesn’t appear to have worked we’ll be doing a full inspection, when we will be happy to look at the other problems that Ms McGregor is now reporting.

“We will carry out any other repairs that are needed as soon as possible, as we have done in the past.

“Ms McGregor has applied for rehousing in the past because of other issues. We have made her a number of offers of temporary accommodation, but she has turned these down.

“If she still wishes to be considered for rehousing her estate management officer will be happy to discuss her housing options with her.”
