PLANS are under way to install a pedestrian crossing and mini-roundabout at a "highly dangerous" Gledholt junction.

Ward councillors and residents have welcomed the move by Kirklees Council's highways service to start work on the scheme.

Detailed designs have yet to be drawn up for the Gledholt Road/Park Drive South and Heaton Road crossroads.

Residents were asked for their ideas in May.

The preferred choice for the scheme has now been sent to councillors.

Clr Jim O'Reilly said there had been a 20-year campaign to improve safety at the junction.

"It is used by such a large number of people and it is highly dangerous. Several cars have been written off there," he said.

Suggested choices included traffic-calming, traffic lights, a pedestrian crossing and a mini- roundabout.

Work on the scheme should start in the new year.
