GORDON Brown’s letter to The Examiner has sparked a row in the wake of the murder of shopkeeper Gurmail Singh.

The Prime Minister wrote exclusively for us last week and delivered a tribute to the dad who was killed in his shop, before setting out differences between his own party and the Conservatives.

In yesterday’s Mail on Sunday, Jim Dodds, Tory leader on Kirklees Council, accused Mr Brown of ‘the lowest form of political engineering’.

He said: “I think it’s disgusting.

“Paying your respects should be divorced from politics, but this has brought the two together.”

His comments came despite the arrival in Huddersfield last week of Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling MP, who after paying tribute to Mr Singh went on to set out how the Conservatives would look to increasing legal protection for shopkeepers who defend themselves.

Cowcliffe Hill Road landlord, Billy Pickup, was quoted by the paper saying: “It’s not a Conservative, Labour or Liberal thing, he didn’t deserve to die in that way.

“For the people who knew him, what happened has ripped the heart out of the community.”
