A very un-festive row has broken out over Holmfirth’s Christmas lights.

Hundreds flocked to the big switch-on at the weekend but many were left disgruntled by the limited display.

Now, after numerous complaints on social media, local traders and businessmen are organising a whip-round to augment the display.

Collection organiser Jonathan Bray said they hoped the extra lights would be installed before the end of this week.

The Christmas lights ceremony included an appearance by Huddersfield Giants star Eorl Crabtree, a visit by Santa in his sleigh and a performance by the Hade Edge Band.

There was even some Christmas snow, courtesy of a snow-blowing machine at the Old Bridge Hotel.

But the actual display of Christmas lights saw many people turn to Facebook to vent their concerns.

“Appalling” was just one of adjectives used to describe the display, with many citing the better arrangements in Honley and Meltham.

The lights were arranged by HEAD, the Holmfirth Enterprise and Development group.

A spokesman said: “We have received no money from Kirklees Council and we have been left to source funds from elsewhere, including grants.

“The council also dropped the Holmfirth Food and Drink Festival which we took over and that was a big success. We have only limited funds and all the businesses were told that in a letter, which asked them to support the lights”.

Mr Bray said: “Business people in the town were very upset to see the comments. It is not what we want to hear.

“We have set up a collection to pay for extra lights and decorations and have already raised hundreds of pounds.

“We hope the extra displays will be in place later this week”.
