A SCHOOL has taken tough action with boys at the centre of a frightening incident.

Five teenage pupils at Royds Hall High School were suspended for 10 days after the incident which saw a local man’s van badly damaged.

And the pupils have also agreed to pay for the repairs to Roger Spivey’s van, after they kicked and dented it during a lunchtime brawl.

Mr Spivey told last month how he had to lock himself in his Paddock factory after the gang of youths started brawling outside the premises.

Royds Hall head teacher Melanie Williams said they had taken prompt action.

"We knew within an hour the names of those involved because other students on the fringes of it were horrified at what went on.

"The boys were excluded from school for five days and then spent five days in our in-house unit for excluded pupils, with the full approval of their parents.

"Myself and other senior team members apologised to Mr Spivey and the boys have agreed to pay for the damage to his vehicle.

"We have had a lot of support from within the school and the community and a lot of people have been in touch to say how out of character it was for Royds Hall.

"The boys have written to Mr Spivey personally to apologise to him and he has been in to school to thank us.

"They have learned a hard lesson in life, about how important it is to control your temper and walk away".
