RUGBY UNION fans cheered on Clive Woodward's England team in Huddersfield pubs today.

One of the busiest was The Warehouse in Zetland Street, where hundreds congregated - an unusual sight at 9am on a Saturday.

Among the audience inside were Dan Moloney, 23, of Linthwaite, and girlfriend Suzie Wright, 21.

Suzie admitted: "I'm just here for Jonny Wilkinson. Hmmm . . . tasty."

She added: "I'm just here because it's the only way I can get Dan to go shopping.

"But it's a good atmosphere in here. It always is for the football World Cup."

Dan said: "I'm not a massive fan of rugby. I've just got into it because of the World Cup.

Watching the match in the pub porch was Oldham man Neil Morris, who is allergic to smoke.

"I'm asthmatic, but they have a really big screen so I can watch the match from out here. It's really good," he said.

Mr Morris, who was in town for the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, added: "I do not really understand the game if I'm honest.

"It's nice to see all these Yorkshire chaps drinking bitter at this time of day. It's quite good actually."

Inside the Old Courthouse in Queen Street cooked breakfasts were being served for the 30 fans who gathered.

Manager John Balshaw, said: "It's not a bad turnout, but not as big for the football World Cup, although the atmosphere is more relaxed."

Richard Gothard, 32, of Mirfield, was at the pub with a party of 10 friends who travelled from Mirfield and various parts of Huddersfield to watch the match.

He said: "I'm here to support the country. I'm not a rugby fan and don't really understand it, to be honest. But the rest of the lads do.

"I got up at 7.15am, but I'm normally up at that time anyway."

About 20 people watched on the big screen in O'Neill's, opposite the university.

Among them was 24-year-old Stephen Parsons, of Belfast, who was over in Huddersfield for a friend's graduation.

He said: "I'm not particularly a rugby fan.

"I just watch rugby during the England games," added Mr Parsons.

Andrew Holmes, 23 of Fartown, said: "I'm not really a rugby fan, but I'm here for a bit of national pride - and the fact that we might actually win something.

"I'm a cricket fan and I don't like to see the Australians win all the time," he added.
