A RUNDOWN area of Huddersfield could be transformed in a £3.7m scheme.

Ambitious plans are being drawn up to tackle blight in Thornton Lodge and Longroyd Bridge.

Homes and commercial properties will be improved.

Some buildings could be demolished and their sites redeveloped.

Large-scale improvements are needed because the area presents a poor image of Huddersfield, say Kirklees Council officials behind the plan.

Julie Kennedy, the council's renewal and regeneration manager, said the area was marked by a poor environment and unrepaired homes and commercial properties.

There was also "a general appearance of decline", she added.

Consultants are due to start soon on developing the project's details.

Work is expected to be carried out over a four-year period, from next April to 2009.

Some £750,000 have been earmarked for the first year, but the money for the rest of the scheme has yet to be arranged.

Ms Kennedy said the area was in a prime position off the main Manchester Road.

But it detracted from the impression of Huddersfield as a good place to live and work.

The aim was to improve its image and reinvigorate homes, she added.
