BUSINESSMAN Gary Verity is to run in the New York Marathon tomorrow.

And his mission is to raise £100,000 for the Yorkshire Cancer

Research charity. Its chief executive, Elaine King, said: "His target of £100,000 is

the largest amount we have ever received from an individual fundraiser. "It is a phenomenal achievement and we are extremely grateful to

Gary for all his hard work in raising such a fantastic amount." Gary's wife, Helen, was diagnosed with myeloma, a type of cancer

that affects the bone marrow, in late 2003. Although she was given 18 months to live in 2004 Mrs Verity is still

enjoying every moment with her husband and their three- and-a-half-year-old daughter, Lily at their home in Cover- dale, North Yorkshire. Mr Verity, who is managing director of Huddersfield-based Adare

Group's On Demand Communications Division, said: "The marathon will definitely be a challenge, but no matter how hard it is I will cross that finishing line and help make a difference." Gary will join about 35,000 other runners pounding through the

city's five boroughs. People wanting to sponsor him can visit
