INDIAN Independence Day was celebrated in style in Huddersfield.

The celebrations of the 61st year of the country’s independence were held at the Hindu Temple on Zetland Street in the town centre.

The event was attended by the Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Karam Hussain and Interfaith representatives and participants enjoyed Indian food and a children’s dance.

India won back its independence from British rule in 1947 after a 90-year struggle.

Kiran Bali, general secretary of the Hindu Society of Kirklees and Calderdale, commented: “On this very important day we remember the sacrifices in the struggle for independence and celebrate the flourishing alliance between Britain and India.

“We pray that both countries will continue their effective integration and fight against terrorism.”
