OYEZ! Oyez!

The south Pennines civil parish of Saddleworth is seeking a town crier.

Saddleworth Parish Council wants to revive the tradition which died out in the mid-1800s.

Now the search is on to find someone to take up the post and promote events in the area – once part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, but now making up a large portion of the Oldham district of Greater Manchester.

Parish council chairman Brian Lord said: “Each of our Saddleworth villages has its own character and every year there are a number of events that bring them together and bring in lots of visitors from outside.

“From being the Brass Band Capital of the world on Whit Fridays to celebrating the Annual Rushcart or being the setting for a number of films and TV shows, Saddleworth is different.

“Our new town crier will also promote many a village event as Saddleworth is really a dozen village communities, linked by their common gritty Pennine heritage.”

Saddleworth includes the villages and hamlets of Austerlands, Delph, Denshaw, Diggle, Dobcross, Friezland, Grasscroft, Greenfield, Grotton, Lydgate, Scouthead, Springhead and Uppermill.

Anyone interested in the role should contact the parish council clerk, Tony Marlor on 01457 876665or e-mail tony@saddleworthparishcouncil.org.uk

The closing date for applications is Friday April 26.
