YORKSHIRE preservationists have erected a new road sign on the edge of the county’s historic boundary.

The new sign was unveiled by Saddleworth White Rose Society, which aims to promote the area’s Yorkshire heritage.

The sign has been placed on the A669 Oldham Road at the boundary of the villages of Lees and Springhead.

The area, known as County End, is closer to the centre of Oldham than the boundary of modern-day West Yorkshire.

Saddleworth was separated from the rest of Yorkshire during the local government reorganisation of 1974.

The area was included in and makes up more than half the area of Oldham Borough Council.

The sign, which has been mounted on a plinth made of reclaimed local stone, was unveiled by the Mayor of Oldham, Clr Richard Knowles.
