A SAFETY award has been given to a Dewsbury power station.

Powergen's Thornhill combined heat and power plant has been awarded a gold award by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents for excellence in health and safety.

Each year the society presents 1,000 companies from the UK and around the world with the award in recognition of excellent health and safety practices in the workplace.

The award recognises consistently high standards of health and safety over four years.

David Aitken, Powergen site supervisor at Thornhill, said: "Health and safety really is our top priority so we are delighted to get some credit for all our hard work."
