CAMPAIGNERS are demanding a pedestrian crossing near a Huddersfield supermarket.

Angry Yvonne Hutchinson said people took their lives in their hands trying to get to the Asda store just off Bradford Road.

She is launching a petition calling for action to protect shoppers crossing the busy dual carriageway.

Ms Hutchinson, 40, said: "I've seen several near-misses as locals run the gauntlet to get their shopping.

"The last straw came when I saw a terrified elderly couple clinging to each other as they tried to cross the road."

She said Kirklees Council had forgotten the needs of pedestrians.

Repeated calls to its highways department had met with no response.

She added: "Each time I called they said they had logged my call and would get back to me. They never did.

"The road is a death-trap, but the council's just not interested."

The busy store was built 10 years ago and is served by a roundabout on Bradford Road.

Ms Hutchinson, who lives across the road in Fixby, said: "I cannot believe that a company as rich as Asda can't afford to protect its shoppers by paying for a pelican crossing.

"And I can't believe that the council doesn't care enough about the safety of local people to make sure a crossing is put in."

A Kirklees spokeswoman said: "There are no plans in the pipeline to provide a formal pedestrian crossing on Bradford Road near Asda.

"However, we will fully investigate this request to assess the scale of the problem and identify what action, if any, could be taken."
