A FIRE safety awareness day will be staged in Meltham next week.

The village's fire engine will be at the Morrisons store next Thursday from 11am to 3pm.

Young children will be able to chat to Freddie the fire engine or Blaze Bear.

A mobile cinema will show films about fire safety and people can clamber on board the fire engine.

Firefighter Andy Rose, of Meltham Fire Station, said: "It's an informal gathering where people can ask us questions about our work, book free home fire safety checks and keep their children entertained with the range of activities and characters.

"We feel that by taking our message and firefighters into the heart of the community we'll reach more people than we would by asking them to come to us.

"We're very approachable and would like to talk as many people as possible, both young and old."

One of the main messages of the day will be the dangers of chip pans.

The fire service will exchange old chip pans for new deep fat fryers free of charge to people aged over 60 who agree to a free home fire safety check.
