A TRAIN service running through Huddersfield has won a top accolade for preventing accidents.

Northern Rail won the Sir George Earle Trophy, awarded by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

The Huddersfield service beat off strong competition from a wide range of industries and became the first train operator to win this trophy in its 53-year history.

Northern Rail carries around 83m passengers per year – almost a third more than when it started in 2004.

RoSPA Chief Executive Tom Mullarkey said: “The judging panel found that safety was at the heart of Northern Rail’s values and that strong leadership and the direct personal commitment of board members was matched by workforce involvement.’’

Northern Rail also scooped the Workforce Involvement In Safety and Health Trophy for demonstrating the best involvement of employees in health and safety management.

Northern Rail managing director Heidi Mottram said: “These awards are fantastic recognition of the hard work and effort put in by everyone across Northern Rail.”
