PEDESTRIANS and cyclists are being urged: Make sure you can be seen on the roads when the clocks go back.

Millions will travel home from work and school in darkness when British Summer Time ends on Sunday.

On that day clocks are put back by one hour.

Safety officials say it is the time of year when it is even more important for vulnerable road users to make themselves visible to drivers.

Many accidents could be prevented if pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders wore brightly-coloured clothes, officers say.

Studies show that by wearing high- visibility and reflective clothing, road-users can be seen by drivers up to three seconds earlier than those wearing dark clothing.

Terry Brown, Kirklees Council's assistant director for environment and transport, said: "Last year 194 people were killed or seriously injured on Kirklees's roads and those included 113 vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, two-wheeled road users and horse riders.

"There are many precautions that can be taken by everybody who uses the road. Drivers should consider the road conditions before starting their journey and allow more time for bad weather and frosty conditions."
