A 10-YEAR-OLD girl has won a new bike, just in time for the summer holidays.

Newsome Junior School pupil Megan Boothroyd was one of about 1,700 pupils who had heard a fire safety talk this year.

Huddersfield firefighter Dave Berry goes to every junior school in the Huddersfield area each year and talks to Year 5 children.

He then leaves each of them a safety booklet, Fire and Road Awareness Needs Knowing - Frank for short.

The youngsters have to answer a few questions at the back, based on information in the booklet, and then complete a slogan.

Megan was the overall winner and received the bike, given by Huddersfield firefighters with help from Colne Valley Cycles at Linthwaite.

The Frank booklets are sponsored by Huddersfield companies Syngenta and Holset Engineering.

Dave, from Red Watch, said: "I talk to the children about fire safety, especially how vital it is to have smoke detectors and the need to have an escape route should a fire break out."
