WEST Yorkshire firefighters achieved their target of 56,000 home safety checks six weeks ahead of schedule. The target was set last year in a drive to reduce fire risks. Some 87,194 smoke alarms were installed during checks over the last 12 months. A spokesman said: "The best way to reduce death and injury from fires is by preventing fires from starting." Some 1,497 electric blankets were exchanged and 2,133 chip-pans replaced with special fryers.
