Supermarket Sainsbury’s has submitted plans for a new store in Birkby.

A formal planning application has now been submitted to Kirklees Council for a site on Birkby Hall Road.

If approved it will replace Shaks Specialist Cars garage and two car repair workshops in the residential area.

The retailer says it will create 20 jobs for local people by opening the Sainsbury’s Local store.

In the planning application Sainsbury’s say: “The redevelopment of the site will improve the appearance of the area and enhance the visual amenity of the Conservation Area.

“The application proposal represents sustainable economic development.”

It also states that “there is no demonstrable retail evidence to suggest that the proposal is likely to lead to significant adverse impact on future investment” in Birkby and the Wasps Nest Road areas where there are already local businesses.

Sainsbury’s say that in a pre-application consultation 10 residents commented – six in support and four against.

Of those in support, Sainsbury’s said they welcome the jobs and the need for a store and community involvement while those against were concerned about parking and traffic problems and impact on nearby businesses.

But the application came as a surprise to traders currently operating on the site.

In July the Examiner reported that the traders, some who have been there for 16 years, were given notice to find alternative premises and that Sainsbury’s had already been to measure up the site.

If approved, it is likely Sainsbury’s Local will open from 7am until 11pm seven days a week.

Comments on the planning application can be submitted to Kirklees Council until October 17 before a decision is made.
